Governor Mbah Signs Bill to Streamline Tax Collection in Enugu
Governor Peter Mbah has signed the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment and Consolidation of Revenue Administration) Law, 2025, effectively ending multiple taxation and introducing a one-stop tax collection system in the state.
Key Features of the Law:- Establishes a single tax collection agency to eliminate multiple tax demands.
- Grants autonomy to the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service, removing bureaucratic hurdles.
- Ensures that all state and local government revenues are properly collected and allocated.
During the signing ceremony at Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah emphasized that the new law simplifies tax payments, especially for businesses, market traders, and private enterprises.
“People have complained about multiple taxation, with different individuals showing up with various government receipts to collect payments. That ends today. With this law, there is now a single, clear point for tax payment, and an official receipt will be issued.”
Mbah noted that ease of tax payment is a crucial factor in the Ease of Doing Business and reaffirmed that there are no new tax increases—instead, the focus is on:
- Expanding the tax base
- Plugging revenue leakages
- Digitizing tax payments to ensure transparency
“We have not increased any tax in Enugu State. What we have done is expand the tax net and ensure all collected funds are remitted to the state.”
The law allows the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service to function independently, setting revenue targets, hiring employees, and operating like a professional organization.
“They now have the power to hire and fire, ensuring efficiency in revenue collection,” Mbah added.
The Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, described the bill as a game-changer that will:
- Improve the Ease of Doing Business
- Increase Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)
- Block revenue leakages
“This is a great gift to the people of Enugu State,” he said.
With this reform, Enugu State is set to become a more business-friendly and financially transparent environment. 🚀
