Elderly Woman Dies After Collapsing From Commercial Bus in Calabar
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the death of an elderly female passenger who collapsed after stepping off a commercial minibus in Calabar on the night of Saturday, July 11, 2026. The incident was confirmed in an official statement signed by ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command's Public Relations Officer.
"The Cross River State Police Command confirms the unfortunate death of a female passenger, Mrs. Affiong Peters, following a medical emergency that occurred on the night of Saturday, 11th July, 2026, in Calabar," the statement read.
A commercial minibus driver, Mr. John Okon John, was transporting eight passengers from the Watt Roundabout area in Calabar toward the Edgerly-Mbukpa-Afukam axis when one passenger asked to be dropped at a stop on Edgerly Road off William George.
As other passengers shifted to make room for the disembarking passenger, Mrs. Peters stepped out of the vehicle. She sat down on the ground, became unresponsive, and was unable to speak.
The passengers on board did not leave her there. They helped return her to the vehicle immediately and the driver took her directly to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for emergency care. She was confirmed dead by medical personnel at UCTH.
Mr. John Okon John subsequently reported the incident to the Atakpa Police Station at approximately 11:30 p.m.
Some passengers at the scene speculated that stress or an underlying health condition may have contributed to her sudden collapse. Those are lay observations, not medical findings. The Cross River State Police Command has not stated an official cause of death, and none has been confirmed by the hospital at the time of this report.
That distinction matters. Reporting speculation as cause of death, even when it seems plausible, is not responsible journalism. What is confirmed is that Mrs. Peters experienced a medical emergency that proved fatal.
In a situation where an elderly woman collapsed on a roadside at night, the passengers on that bus made a choice to help. They got her back into the vehicle. They ensured she reached a hospital. That response, ordinary as it might sound, is not something that can be taken for granted.
The driver also did the right thing, reporting the incident to police even though he had done nothing wrong. That kind of transparent reporting helps families get information and helps authorities maintain accurate records.
Mrs. Peters' family has been located and notified. They are currently making arrangements for the preservation of her remains, according to the police statement.
