Flood Kills Two In Damaturu, Yobe Communities

Two people have been confirmed dead following the flood incident in Damaturu, after torrential rainfall triggered flash flooding in Malari, Pompomari, and nearby settlements in Damaturu Local Government Area on Sunday.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the deaths in a Flash Flood Incident Report. The victims were identified as:

• Isa Haruna, 38, a security guard attached to Mallam Matari
• Abba Kyari, 18, who drowned in the Pompomari area

The Yobe SEMA Search and Rescue Team worked alongside the State Fire Service in Damaturu to respond to the emergency.

"Upon arrival at the scene, the victims were confirmed dead, and their bodies were conveyed to the mortuary at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu," the report stated.

The Yobe flood in Damaturu tragedy was not isolated. SEMA's broader assessment shows heavy rainfall also caused flash flooding across Nguru, Bursari, and Machina local government areas the same weekend, affecting multiple communities and damaging residential buildings. The agency has deployed a rapid assessment team to determine the full scale of displacement and damage across all affected areas.

With schools currently on holiday, SEMA is urging parents and guardians to keep close watch over children in the aftermath of the tragedy. The agency shared a list of safety precautions for residents, including:

• Reporting emergencies directly to SEMA
• Keeping children away from rivers and culverts
• Avoiding flooded roads and waterways
• Moving to higher ground during floods to avoid contact with contaminated water
• Clearing blocked drainage systems
• Paying close attention to weather warnings

Authorities have not yet estimated the full scale of property damage across the affected districts. With flooding already confirmed across four local government areas, the coming days are likely to bring a clearer picture of how many households have been affected, and how much support they will need to recover.
