International Youths Day: Peter Obi Says Nigerian Youths Not A Burden

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, marked International Youth Day with a clear message that Peter Obi's "youths not a burden" sentiment is at the center of his vision for the country, describing young Nigerians as the nation's greatest asset rather than a problem to be managed.

Obi shared the reflection in a post on his verified X account, using a flight he had taken the day before as a real-world example of what he believes Nigerian youth are capable of when given the chance.

"Yesterday, while travelling to Bauchi, I was reminded once again of what our youths are capable of. The two captains who flew us were young men aged 20 and 28, respectively, while the crew members were also in their 20s," he wrote.

He said the experience reinforced something he has long believed about age and capability.

"Their competence, confidence and professionalism were a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to excellence when young people are allowed to learn, work and lead," Obi said.

For Obi, this was not just about one flight crew. He pointed to a wide range of sectors where young Nigerians are already excelling, arguing that talent has never been the country's shortfall.

"Across football, technology, medicine, aviation, entrepreneurship, academia, the creative industries and countless other fields, our young people continue to demonstrate that Nigeria has no shortage of talent. What we lack is the deliberate investment and enabling environment to help that talent flourish," he said.

He was direct about rejecting the framing of young people as a challenge to be handled.

"Our youths are not a burden to be managed. They are our greatest national asset and the builders of the Nigeria we desire," Obi said.

Obi tied the message to a broader policy point, arguing that Nigeria needs to invest more seriously in education, healthcare, technology, sports, and quality job creation if it wants to keep its brightest young people building their future at home rather than abroad.

He closed the post with a direct commitment.

"On this International Youth Day, I celebrate our young people and reaffirm my commitment to a Nigeria where every young person has the opportunity to learn, work, create, lead and prosper. With the support and active participation of the youth, a new Nigeria is possible," he wrote.
