Nigerian Lawmaker Threatens Legal Action Against UK-Based Nigerian Over Alleged Misrepresentation of Lawmakers' Salaries and Benefits on Social Media.

A member of the House of Representatives from Kogi state has threatened to file a lawsuit against a Nigerian living in the UK for using social media to make accusations regarding the pay and benefits he receives for his position as a lawmaker.
Taking to the floor of the house to air his grievance, the lawmaker claimed that Adeola, a Nigerian living in the UK, had claimed on social media that he and other lawmakers were paid N2.5 million a month for their basic salaries, N7.5 million for furniture, N1.2 million for newspapers, N631, 000 for wardrobe, N4.9 million for lodging, N828, 000 for utilities, and N621, 000 for personal assistance.

He claimed that the same individual had claimed in December 2023 that lawmakers had received a caravan full of food and urged Nigerians to demand their fair share from their representatives.

‘’If this house does not take a stand on this case against her, I, Elder Leke Joseph Abejide, will take it up with her because, in my own constituency, this is what is now spreading around that I take this amount. I put up my salary for the world to see. What is there that we are hiding? We are not hiding anything in these hallowed chambers.

I want to bet with you that there are some members that cannot survive more than five days with their salaries. Even before the end of the month comes, the request from your constituents has already taken everything and somebody who does not reside in Nigeria will be instigating the general public against us and then we will be quiet. This is the privilege that has been breached against me and by extension to all members of this house''
