Doctor Admits Writing El-Rufai's Medical Report

Bello Abubakar, the oncologist facing El-Rufai doctor medical report charges over a document tied to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's bail application, has confirmed he wrote the report himself, while firmly denying any plot to falsify it.

In a statement to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Abubakar acknowledged authoring the report at the center of the controversy. What he rejected was any suggestion that he conspired with others to fabricate false information for use in court.

He was equally firm about one specific name connected to the case.

"I cannot recall anybody with the name Mohammed Bala Aliyu, and I have never authorised him to depose an affidavit," Abubakar said, distancing himself from the individual accused of using the report to swear to an affidavit supporting El-Rufai's bail request.

The ICPC has filed formal charges accusing Abubakar of knowingly issuing a false document, titled "Medical Report and Expert Opinion for Urgent Medical Intervention" and dated June 10, 2026, in order to influence court proceedings tied to El-Rufai's case before the Kaduna State High Court.

According to the commission, the report was submitted for official use despite serious doubts about its accuracy and whether it followed standard medical practice.

It is important to note that these remain allegations at this stage. Abubakar has not been convicted of any offense and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Abubakar has maintained throughout that he acted within his official capacity as a physician and rejects any claim that he took part in a scheme to deceive authorities.

He also used his statement to explain his long-standing relationship with El-Rufai, saying the connection began years earlier through the former governor's wife, whose first child he delivered, before he went on to treat El-Rufai directly as a patient.

He said he registered at the National Hospital in Abuja in 2005 and had seen the former governor on multiple occasions in the years since.

This case sits alongside a broader set of corruption charges against El-Rufai himself, including allegations tied to a multi-billion naira surveillance contract. El-Rufai has denied all charges against him and describes the prosecutions as politically motivated, a claim prosecutors dispute.
