Irish Teacher Enoch Burke Jailed Again After Dispute Over Pronoun Use at School

Enoch Burke, an Irish teacher who was fired from Wilson's Hospital School for refusing to use a transitioning student's preferred pronouns, has been sentenced to a third stint in jail after being arrested outside the school.

The dispute began in May 2022 when Mr. Burke, citing his religious beliefs, opposed the school’s request to use “they” pronouns and the new name of a transitioning student. Burke’s refusal to comply with the directive from principal Niamh McShane led to his dismissal for gross misconduct in January 2023.

Mr. Burke, who openly criticized the school’s policy on transgender students, was arrested again on September 2 outside the school in County Westmeath, Ireland, for violating a High Court order prohibiting him from entering the school's premises. He was taken to Mountjoy Prison and jailed for contempt of court.

During the hearing, Burke refused to state whether he intended to return to the school, prompting Judge Michael Quinn to order his imprisonment. Burke told the judge, “You will answer to God for imprisoning me for my religious beliefs.”

Burke’s legal battles have highlighted ongoing tensions over the rights of religious expression versus adherence to school policies on gender identity. He argued that his actions were driven by his Christian faith and expressed strong opposition to what he described as the forced imposition of transgender beliefs on students.

Burke continues to contest his dismissal, claiming that the court failed to consider the legitimacy of the school’s demands. Meanwhile, the school’s legal representatives cited ongoing disruptions caused by his presence and described his conduct as harmful to the school’s operations.

Despite his termination, Mr. Burke has been receiving his salary from the Department of Education while he appeals the school’s decision. The court was informed that his appeal has been delayed pending a ruling on his separate legal challenge regarding the appeal board members.

Burke’s case has attracted public attention and sparked debates about the balance between personal beliefs and professional responsibilities in educational settings.
