Alexx Ekubo Dead at 40: Nollywood Mourns a Rare Soul

Nollywood has lost one of its most beloved faces, and the grief across the industry is raw and unfiltered.

Popular Nigerian actor Alexx Ekubo has died at the age of 40, following a prolonged and largely private battle with stage 4 liver cancer. He passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, and the news broke publicly on Tuesday, May 12, after colleagues and industry figures took to social media to confirm what many had quietly feared for months.

Alexx Ekubo dead at 40 is not a headline anyone in Nollywood wanted to write or read.

A Battle Fought in Silence

Nollywood filmmaker Stanley Ontop, a close associate of the late actor, revealed that Alexx had been quietly battling stage 4 liver cancer since 2024. He underwent treatment and a liver transplant, and for a brief period, he returned to work. But the liver failed again. Complications followed, and his condition steadily declined until his passing.

"Alex was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2024. After undergoing treatment and a liver transplant, he briefly returned to work. Unfortunately, the liver failed again and complications arose, and his condition deteriorated until his passing," Stanley Ontop wrote on Instagram.

His family had not released an official statement at the time of publication.

The Long Silence That Said So Much

For months, fans and colleagues had noticed something was wrong. Alexx's last post on Instagram was on December 30, 2024. No explanation. No goodbye. Just silence, stretching across weeks and then months.

The silence triggered waves of concern. A video that later surfaced online showed him looking noticeably slimmer and subdued. His friend and fellow actor IK Ogbonna tried to ease the worry publicly, saying Alexx had chosen to step back from social media for personal reasons and had appeared fine at a family gathering.

Looking back now, it feels like Alexx already knew. And he chose to spend whatever time he had left on his own terms, away from cameras and timelines, surrounded by the people he loved.

That quiet dignity is something almost every tribute has touched on.

The Friends Who Cannot Find the Words

Among the most emotional responses came from Grace Makun, wife of comedian and actor Yomi Makun, also known as Yomi Casual, one of Alexx's closest friends. Her tribute captured the grief of an inner circle that had been carrying this weight quietly for a long time.

"I can't explain this. No it's not ok. I wish we didn't listen to you and broke down that wall of privacy you had built, burn it no matter how many times you put it up," she wrote.

"Your guys are not ok o. Ikuku, your guys are not ok o, your guys are not ok at all Alex. Your parents, siblings, wife, your gang, your colleagues, fans ahhhhh."

Grace also shared several photos of her husband and Alexx together, speaking openly about how close the two were and how devastating the loss is for everyone in their circle. Her tribute also appeared to reference a wife among those Alexx left behind, though no official confirmation has been released by the family at this time.

Actress Funke Akindele wrote on her Instagram Story: "I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. Ore mi, as you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together."

Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe shared: "I'm struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul."

Bolanle Ninalowo, currently in the United States, wrote simply: "Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all."

Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo reflected: "Life is not only fickle, it can also feel unreal. You came, you saw, and you conquered. We are proud of the life you lived, the journey you embraced, and the legacy you leave behind."

A Life Worth Remembering

Alexx Ekubo was born on April 10, 1986. He rose to prominence through his role in the Nollywood blockbuster Weekend Getaway and went on to feature in acclaimed productions including The Bling Lagosians and A Sunday Affair. He was the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria contest and in 2020, the United Nations named him one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40, recognizing his contributions to entertainment and social development across the continent.

He was charming, versatile, and gifted. He was also, by most accounts, a deeply private person who valued his relationships and protected the people he loved.

Alexx Ekubo dead at 40 is a loss that will take Nollywood a long time to absorb. But the way he lived, and the love pouring in from every corner of the industry, says everything about who he was.
