Honda Car Hits Two Tricycles at Federal Bus Stop Ipaja Road, About 10 Injured

A Honda car collided with two commercial tricycles at the Federal Bus Stop along Ipaja Road in Lagos State on Monday at approximately 8:50 a.m., injuring an estimated ten commuters in varying degrees of severity. The vehicle involved, a Honda car with registration number KTU 921 JY, was reportedly being driven by a woman when the incident occurred.

The Ipaja Road Lagos accident is one of several road incidents on that corridor in recent months, but the circumstances of this one are drawing particular attention.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the female driver was moving at speed when she attempted to swerve to avoid hitting a street sweeper attached to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). The evasive maneuver did not go as intended.

Witnesses say the vehicle struck the sweeper before the driver lost control. The car then veered into the oncoming lane and ploughed into two commercial tricycles, commonly known as Keke, carrying passengers.

It is the kind of split-second sequence that plays out on Lagos roads with painful regularity. One obstacle, one instinctive reaction, and suddenly multiple people are hurt.

Of the roughly ten people reported injured, some escaped with minor wounds while others sustained more serious injuries. Several victims received initial emergency care at a nearby private medical facility before being transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for further treatment.

Response at the scene was relatively swift. Neighbourhood security personnel, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and Nigeria Police Force officers from the Gowon Divisional Headquarters were observed managing rescue operations and controlling traffic in the aftermath.

That combination of responders arriving quickly likely helped prevent the situation from deteriorating further, particularly given the volume of morning commuter traffic on Ipaja Road at that hour.

At the time of filing this report, no official statement had been released by the relevant authorities regarding the incident. The status of the Honda driver, whether she was detained, injured, or questioned, was also not confirmed at the time of publication.
