Nigerian Army Neutralizes Two Suspected Bandits in Targeted Clearance Operation in Taraba State
Soldiers from 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and stationed at Sarkin Kudu in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, have neutralized two suspected bandits during a well-coordinated clearance operation. The operation took place on May 18, 2026, following credible intelligence about bandit activity at a hideout near Dooshima District in the Sarkin Kudu area of Ibi LGA.
The Nigerian Army Taraba State bandit operation was confirmed in a statement by Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations.
According to the statement, troops acted swiftly on reliable intelligence reports indicating that suspected bandits had established a hideout in the area. When soldiers moved in, a confrontation ensued. Two suspected bandits were neutralized during the encounter, while others managed to flee, reportedly with gunshot wounds.
The fact that others escaped with injuries means the security threat in that corridor has not been fully eliminated. Patrols and follow-up operations in the area will likely determine whether those individuals are tracked down or allowed to regroup.
The items found at the scene paint a picture of an active and reasonably equipped criminal cell, not a casual gathering.
Recovered materials included one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, one locally made handgun, one Android phone, three smaller mobile phones, two charm vests, and various personal belongings. All recovered items have been secured and will be handed over to the relevant authorities for further action.
The presence of charm vests is a detail worth noting. Their use among armed groups in Nigeria's northwest and northcentral regions has been widely documented, reflecting the blend of criminal enterprise and cultural belief systems that characterizes banditry in these areas. It does not change the outcome of the operation, but it adds context to who these groups are and how they operate.
Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, commended the soldiers involved for what the statement described as bravery, audacious management, and quick reaction.
That commendation matters beyond ceremony. In an environment where troops are routinely operating in difficult terrain against an enemy that relies on surprise and local knowledge, swift and decisive response to intelligence is exactly the kind of behavior the military needs to reinforce.
Taraba State sits in Nigeria's northcentral region and has seen persistent banditry, communal violence, and armed group activity for several years. Ibi Local Government Area in particular has been a pressure point, with communities along its corridors vulnerable to raids and displacement.
Operation Whirl Stroke has been the primary military framework for addressing insecurity across Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, and Plateau states. The Nigerian Army Taraba State bandit operation near Dooshima District is part of that ongoing effort to deny armed groups the freedom to establish and maintain hideouts within the operation's area of responsibility.
