Nigerian Army Rescues Four Kidnap Victims and Arrests Six Suspects Across Imo, Cross River, and Enugu
Troops of the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South-East, operating under Operation UDO KA, rescued four kidnap victims and arrested six suspects during coordinated security operations across Imo, Cross River, and Enugu states between Friday and Saturday. The operational update was provided to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday.
The Nigerian Army southeast operations rescue arrest 2026 cover kidnapping, election-day abductions, and a cultist hideout raid, each telling a different story about the nature of criminal activity currently being confronted in the region.
In Imo State, soldiers from the 34 Artillery Brigade's Forward Operating Base in Izombe, working alongside a local security group, responded to intelligence about a kidnapping along the Oguta-Owerri route in Oguta Local Government Area.
Troops tracked the abductors to their hideout in Okohia Umueju bush, where they found four victims in captivity. Three were rescued. One was killed by the abductors during an attempt to flee, a detail that carries the full weight of what these operations cost when they do not move fast enough.
"Troops engaged the criminals, forcing them to flee in disarray and abandon the victims," the report stated.
Items recovered at the scene included N987,500 in cash, suspected to be ransom proceeds, five mobile phones, and two power banks. No arrests were made in Imo as the suspects fled during the engagement.
The Cross River incident is particularly disturbing for what it reveals about the intersection of electoral processes and criminal opportunism in Nigeria.
During a political party primary election at a hotel in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area, two separate groups of suspected kidnappers stormed the venue simultaneously. One group, operating in a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABJ 810HL, abducted the INEC Returning Officer on duty and coerced the victim into transferring N70,000. A second group arrived on motorcycles and carted away ballot boxes.
Troops mobilized quickly, intercepted the vehicle, rescued the INEC official, and detained three suspects. One armed suspect fled into the forest carrying a bag containing an ATM card, a mobile phone, and election materials. The second group escaped with the ballot boxes.
The recovered vehicle, the rescued official, and the three detained suspects were in military custody at the time of the report. Efforts to track the fleeing suspects were ongoing.
Attacking an election venue and abducting an electoral official is not ordinary criminality. It is a direct assault on democratic process, and the boldness of a coordinated two-group operation at a hotel during a public event suggests a level of planning and confidence that should concern electoral authorities.
Under Operation Eastern Sanity II, troops conducted a raid at Achi Town in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, acting on intelligence about a building allegedly used by cultists.
The operation led to the recovery of eight motorcycles and two buckets of locally made gunpowder. Three suspects were arrested: an 85-year-old man and two women aged 26 and 29.
The age profile of the suspects, particularly the 85-year-old, will raise questions about the nature of the alleged involvement and the circumstances of the arrest. Those details will presumably emerge as the investigation progresses.
The Nigerian Army southeast operations rescue arrest 2026 outcomes reflect a security environment that is active, adaptive, and multi-dimensional across the region. The Army reiterated its commitment to sustaining operations to prevent kidnapping and other criminal activity across the South-East and surrounding areas.
