NYSC Member Dies After Alleged Vigilante Beating in Buruku, Chairman Condemns Attack

The chairman of Buruku Local Government Area in Benue State, Hon. Raymond Aondoakura, has condemned the death of Ben Agir Une, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who was allegedly beaten by community vigilantes.

Une, a native of Tongov in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, was reportedly arrested during a night patrol in Anibros Settlement, Buruku LGA. He was suspected of being in possession of a stolen motorcycle.

According to available accounts, Une sustained serious injuries after he was severely beaten during the arrest. He was subsequently taken to a police station, where officers recognised the severity of his condition and referred him to a hospital for immediate medical attention. He did not respond to treatment and was later pronounced dead.

Reacting to the incident, Hon. Aondoakura described the death as deeply troubling and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the protection of lives and property. "This unfortunate act does not in any way represent who we are as a people. It is a grave violation, and it will not be tolerated," he said.

The chairman extended his condolences to Une's family, the people of Katsina-Ala LGA, and the NYSC management, describing the loss as a devastating blow.

On accountability, Aondoakura confirmed that security authorities had detained all persons involved in the incident and ordered a thorough investigation and prosecution of those found culpable. "We will not shield anyone found culpable. The law must take its full course," he said.

He also used the occasion to caution community vigilante groups against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that suspects must always be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

Residents of Buruku LGA were assured of the administration's continued dedication to security, peace, and the rule of law.
