Obasanjo Urges Tinubu To Tackle Killings, Says Nigerians May Seek Help Abroad

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action against the criminals responsible for ongoing killings across the country. According to him, if the Nigerian government cannot protect its citizens, Nigerians have the right to seek help from the international community.

Obasanjo made the remarks on Friday, November 28, while speaking at the Plateau Unity Christmas and Praise Festival. He described the continued killings as senseless and expressed frustration that citizens were dying in different regions and religions while government responses remained ineffective.

The former president argued that modern technology makes it impossible for criminals to remain hidden, noting that Nigeria has long had the ability to track perpetrators. He added that the country now has improved tools, including drones, to neutralize threats without relying on slow ground operations.

Obasanjo questioned why these capacities were not being fully used. He criticised negotiations and ransom payments to armed groups, saying such practices only empower criminals. He urged government officials at all levels to take their responsibilities seriously and act decisively to stop the violence.

“We are tired of being killed,” he said, insisting that the life of every Nigerian matters regardless of religion. He emphasized that the killings must end and that leaders must intervene boldly to restore safety.
