Troops Arrest Herders In Benue Farm Security Operation

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke detained two herders accused of trespassing and damaging crops on a communal farm in Makurdi. The Benue farm security operation happened during peak harvest season when tensions between farmers and herders often rise.

According to a statement released by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the arrest took place on November 20, 2025. OPWS troops stationed at Zongo Akiki were on a routine patrol meant to protect farmlands when they spotted the two men. The military claims the herders had driven their livestock into residents' farmland, causing visible destruction to crops.

The Benue farm security operation prevented what could have escalated into a serious clash. The suspects were taken into custody for further investigation and potential legal action. Authorities said the quick intervention helped avoid any confrontation between the affected farmers and the herders.

Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander for Operation Whirl Stroke, praised the professionalism of the troops. He urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands whenever disagreements arise.

He stressed that herders must follow the rules and avoid actions that fuel conflict. Violence or retaliatory attacks, he said, only deepen divisions and disrupt efforts to maintain peaceful coexistence. The Benue farm security operation, according to him, reflects the mission’s commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring that legitimate businesses can thrive without fear.

The Force Commander emphasized that Operation Whirl Stroke remains dedicated to supporting farmers and preventing activities that threaten food security.
