Borno Police Arrest Schoolteacher for Brutally Assaulting 10-Year-Old Student

The Borno State Police Command has arrested Bukar Modu, a 30-year-old schoolteacher, for allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old student, Bashir Babaji, in the Bulabulin Alajeri area of Maiduguri.

The disturbing incident, which occurred on March 16, 2025, gained widespread attention after a viral video circulated over the weekend, triggering nationwide outrage. In the video, Modu is seen viciously beating the young boy while another child pours sand and water on him. Despite the victim's cries for help and visible distress, the teacher continued the attack, even using his leg to pin the boy down.

In a statement released on Monday, ASP Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest:

“The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of one Bukar Modu, 30 years old, in connection with a viral video showing the physical abuse of a minor in the Bulabulin Alajeri area along Baga Road, Maiduguri.”

Daso explained that the teacher had punished the boy for allegedly escaping from class. After receiving the video, the police swiftly launched an investigation. With the support of local residents and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, the suspect was apprehended.

The victim has since been taken to the hospital for medical examination, while the suspect remains in custody. Daso assured that the case is being thoroughly investigated and will be charged to court upon conclusion.

Acknowledging public outrage, Daso urged citizens to remain calm and avoid inciting comments that could jeopardize the investigation:

“The Borno State Police Command remains committed to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and welfare of all children in the state. We assure the public that this case will be pursued with the utmost diligence and transparency.”
