CAN Northern Leader Warns Against Betrayal, Calls for National Integrity at Easter
Reverend John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, has expressed concern that betrayal and dishonesty continue to hinder Nigeria's progress across all sectors.
Speaking in Kaduna on Sunday during an Easter message titled “Overcoming Betrayal at Easter,” Rev. Hayab reflected on how acts of betrayal—both personal and institutional—are at the heart of the nation's current struggles.
“Nigerians are betraying their country, and people are betraying each other,” he stated. “This culture of betrayal is contributing to the challenges we face today.”
He pointed specifically to the difficulty faced by security agencies in tackling banditry and terrorism, noting that internal leaks often sabotage efforts to protect lives and property.
“Security agencies cannot succeed when insiders betray strategies by leaking them to criminal elements,” he warned. “These betrayals not only embolden bandits but also result in the loss of lives, property, and economic resources.”
Drawing a parallel with the biblical story of Judas Iscariot, Rev. Hayab reminded the public of the consequences of betraying trust for personal gain. “When Judas betrayed Jesus for money, he later took his own life, realizing he had wronged an innocent soul.”
He emphasized that betrayal—whether of individuals, communities, or the nation—never ends well. “Those entrusted with responsibility must uphold integrity,” he said. “If the country trusts you with leadership or national resources, you must prove faithful.”
Rev. Hayab called on all Nigerians, particularly those in positions of authority, to reflect on their roles and recommit to accountability. He urged citizens to stop actions that undermine others or the collective good, stressing that betrayal ultimately leads to destruction.
He concluded by appealing for cooperation with security agencies, stating, “Let us work together to keep our country safe and united. Trust is the foundation of progress.”
