Presidency Responds to Pastor Bakare’s Critique, Says Remarks Were Balanced and Respected
The Presidency has responded to recent remarks made by Pastor Tunde Bakare regarding the current state of the nation, describing his comments as “fairly unbiased” and reflective of his personal perspective.
Pastor Bakare, General Overseer of The Citadel Global Community Church, gave a State of the Nation address on Sunday in Lagos, during which he urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt a more humble and consultative approach to leadership.
In his message, Bakare expressed concern over what he termed a “descent into tyranny” and “brazen abuse of power,” criticizing what he perceived as a lack of character and humility among those at the helm of Nigeria’s affairs.
“Dear Nigerians,” Bakare said, “the past few months have shown that those steering the nation lack the character this moment demands. We are seeing an erosion of constitutional governance.”
His comments came amid rising insecurity, especially in parts of Plateau and Benue states, where increased reports of killings and kidnappings have sparked public concern.
In response, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, acknowledged the cleric’s right to speak out, noting that Bakare’s message contained both criticism and commendation.
“Importantly, Pastor Bakare acknowledged the achievements and progress made by the President and his administration,” Bwala said in a statement. “Although we may not agree with every point he raised, we respect his right to express his opinion.”
Bwala reiterated the administration’s commitment to improving the nation’s condition, assuring the public that President Tinubu remains focused on delivering on his promises.
“We want to assure Pastor Bakare, and indeed all Nigerians, that President Tinubu is determined to fulfill his mandate and uplift the nation,” he added.
