Yobe Projects ₦15 Billion Internally Generated Revenue for 2025

The Yobe State Internal Revenue Service (YIRS) has set a target of ₦15 billion for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2025, up from the current ₦12 billion.

Speaking to journalists in Damaturu, the Executive Chairman of YIRS, Suleiman Bakura, revealed that the state is implementing a series of reforms aimed at achieving this ambitious goal.

According to Bakura, key strategies to reach the ₦15 billion target include:

  • Full automation of tax collection

  • Cross-agency collaboration

  • Public engagement to boost voluntary tax compliance

He explained that the state has modernized its tax system by adopting digital platforms and launching staff training programs, all aimed at boosting transparency, efficiency, and revenue growth.

“We believe the ₦15 billion target is realistic because we are addressing long-standing leakages and inefficiencies in our collection system,” Bakura said.

He acknowledged that ongoing security challenges, particularly insurgency-related disruptions caused by Boko Haram, have significantly impacted Yobe’s business environment and tax base. These security issues have led to damaged infrastructure and weakened economic activity in some parts of the state.

Despite these challenges, Bakura encouraged residents, business owners, and industries to fulfill their tax obligations as a way of supporting state development.

“Paying taxes helps create an enabling environment for business growth, infrastructure expansion, and economic recovery,” he stated.

YIRS emphasized that with the right support from the public, Yobe State can build a more resilient and self-sustaining economy.
