President Tinubu Flags Off Calabar-Abuja Super Highway: A New Dawn for Southeast Connectivity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the construction of the 465-kilometer Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja mega highway. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at Amuro Mgbom Primary School in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Represented by Governor Francis Nwifuru, President Tinubu commended the people of the South-East for their ongoing support and expressed confidence that the project would be completed on time and to specification.
Speaking at the event, Governor Nwifuru emphasized the importance of the initiative, describing it as a vital step toward realizing the aspirations of the people.
"This project is a reflection of President Tinubu’s commitment to leveraging infrastructure as a catalyst for national development. We are committed to supporting this administration as a way of showing our gratitude," he stated.
Governor Nwifuru further noted the highway’s transformative potential: "For Ebonyi, a landlocked state with immense agricultural and mineral resources, this project breaks years of isolation. It opens up access to regional and national markets, reduces transport costs, creates jobs, and boosts the local economy."
He added, “This is not just a construction project—it signals the end of marginalization and the beginning of nationwide inclusion and opportunity.”
Several state officials also voiced their support for President Tinubu, with some openly endorsing him for a second term.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, described Tinubu as a unifying leader. "He is building legacy projects across every region. As someone who saw very little federal intervention as governor, I can testify that this administration has changed the narrative," Umahi said.
He urged the local communities to cooperate fully, assuring them that the project would be delivered within the scheduled timeframe.
Other prominent figures, including former SGF Senator Pius Anyim and former Senator Azu Agboti, echoed similar sentiments. They commended the president for his appointments and regional development efforts, encouraging South-Easterners to reciprocate the goodwill.
Chioma Nweze, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, applauded Governor Nwifuru for fostering a conducive environment for federal projects. “The South-East is firmly behind President Tinubu,” she affirmed.
Olufumsho Adebiyi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, highlighted the economic impact of the project. He stated that the new road would not only enhance trade and agriculture but also provide employment for the youth.
Engineer Bede Obiora, speaking on behalf of the project’s contractor, assured the public of strict compliance with quality standards. He revealed that the 123-kilometer segment within Ebonyi State—beginning at Ndibe Beach in Afikpo and ending at Mbeke Ishieke—would be constructed using reinforced concrete for durability.
