WAEC Withdraws Licenses of 574 Nigerian Schools Over Exam Malpractice
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially withdrawn the recognition of 574 secondary schools across Nigeria due to their involvement in examination malpractice.
This was confirmed by Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC's National Office, during a press conference held at the council’s headquarters in Lagos on Thursday.
Dr. Dangut stated that the affected schools would no longer serve as examination centers, and WAEC would not conduct any assessments within their premises going forward.
“These schools have had their recognition revoked for involvement in various forms of exam misconduct,” he said. “We have forwarded the list of the 574 de-recognized schools to the Federal Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities, and the same applies across all examination bodies.”
Despite this development, WAEC confirmed that preparations for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are in full swing. The exam is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 24, 2025, and conclude on Friday, June 20, 2025.
A total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered for the 2025 WASSCE. This includes 994,025 female students and 979,228 male students.
WAEC emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process and urged schools to strictly adhere to examination regulations.
