Governor Alia Calls on Federal Government to Intervene in Benue Killings

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has appealed to the Federal Government for urgent intervention following a series of violent attacks in parts of Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas. The governor described the incidents as “serious carnage” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.

The attacks, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herders, reportedly claimed the lives of more than 56 people and left several others injured in multiple communities last Friday.

During a visit to the affected areas, Governor Alia conducted an on-the-spot assessment and called the assaults deliberate, coordinated, and targeted at specific communities. While acknowledging previous support from the Federal Government and the efforts of security agencies, he emphasized the need for more decisive action.

“Although our security personnel have been working tirelessly, these attacks still occurred,” he stated. “Something drastic must be done. I’m calling on the Federal Government to support us and come to our aid promptly.”

The governor offered his condolences to the families of the victims and urged local youth to remain calm, avoid retaliation, and allow the government to handle the matter through lawful means.

He assured the public that his administration is already implementing swift and firm measures to end the violence and restore peace.

As part of his visit, Alia held a closed-door meeting with traditional leaders, youth representatives, and local government officials. He warned that anyone found aiding or associating with those responsible for the killings would face consequences.

“We know our enemies, and we must confront them directly,” the governor asserted.

Governor Alia also commended the efforts of security agencies, the Most Rev. Isaac Dugu (Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala), and traditional leaders for their roles in managing the situation.

Meanwhile, Solomon Wombo, who represents the Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency, condemned the attacks and pledged to collaborate with state authorities to address the threat.

Local leaders, including Kav Clement (Chairman of Logo LGA), Terngu Iorhuna (Mue Ter Chongo of Logo), and youth leader Simon Yangetuma, expressed sorrow over the killings and echoed calls for swift action by both state and federal governments.
