President Tinubu Mourns the Passing of Pope Francis, Hails His Legacy of Justice and Compassion
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, describing him as “a humble servant of God, a tireless advocate for the poor, and a guiding light to millions around the world.”
In a statement released by the Statehouse Press Office, President Tinubu said, “Today, with a heavy heart, I join the Catholic faithful and Christians across the globe in mourning the death of Pope Francis. His passing, shortly after the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, is a sacred return to his Maker during a season of renewed hope.”
Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis was widely respected for his emphasis on social justice, humility, and care for the vulnerable. President Tinubu praised his moral leadership, recalling how the late pontiff consistently challenged global leaders to pursue justice and compassion.
“He urged nations to welcome the stranger, reminded us to protect our common home, and called for solidarity with the marginalized,” the President noted, referencing Pope Francis’s influential encyclical Laudato Si’, which focused on climate action and environmental stewardship.
President Tinubu further highlighted the Pope’s role as a unifier during times of global division: “He was an instrument of peace who lived out Christ’s message—love for God and love for all humanity. He built bridges between faiths, classes, and nations.”
Reflecting on the Pope’s enduring support for the Global South, Tinubu remarked, “He was a consistent voice for the developing world, confronting economic injustice and praying tirelessly for peace in regions plagued by conflict.”
The President acknowledged the comfort and clarity Pope Francis brought to believers through his writings. “His pastoral letters and encyclicals provided hope and direction in an increasingly uncertain world,” he said.
In a personal reflection, Tinubu recalled seeing the Pope deliver the traditional Easter blessing at St. Peter’s Basilica just one day before his passing. “I was grateful to see him strong enough to address the faithful on Easter Sunday,” he noted.
“As we mourn his loss, let us also honor his legacy through action—by lifting the oppressed, healing divisions, and upholding the dignity of all people,” the President added.
On behalf of the Nigerian government and people, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, Christians worldwide, and the Vatican. “May God Almighty grant His beloved servant eternal rest.”
