Benue State Government Closes Businesses in Arrears, Urges Compliance
The Benue State Government has commenced actions to shut down businesses operating without proper registration or in arrears. According to reports, more than 20,000 unregistered enterprises are currently operating in the state.
This announcement was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Manasseh Alumo, who emphasized the government’s intent to enforce compliance.
Commissioner Alumo revealed that Governor Hyacinth Alia has authorized the ministry to promote the state’s ultra-modern fashion hub. The facility, constructed and donated by the federal government, is part of efforts to stimulate economic growth and create opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Alumo urged business owners to engage with the ministry to resolve issues and avoid the risk of closure. He clarified that the ministry is responsible for issuing Business Premises Certificates, while the Benue Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) oversees tax collection.
“For years, the ministry failed to enforce compliance on business registration and renewals,” Alumo admitted. “However, after my recent budget defense at the state assembly, it became clear that we needed to act decisively to generate revenue.”
The Commissioner disclosed that enforcement teams are compiling data on the more than 20,000 unregistered businesses operating within the state. The crackdown aims to ensure adherence to state regulations and enhance revenue collection.
Despite the strict enforcement measures, Alumo commended Governor Alia for supporting local businesses by providing subsidies and reviving dormant industries. He noted that these efforts are part of the administration’s broader plan to boost economic development in Benue State.
