NNPC Ltd Attributes Buguma Wellhead Fire to Pipeline Vandalism

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has blamed pipeline vandals for the fire incident at its Buguma Wellhead 008, operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Eighteen Operating Ltd (NEOL).

In a statement by Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, the company revealed that the fire resulted from vandals attempting to compromise the Christmas Tree and steal crude oil. The sabotage caused extensive damage to the well’s back pressure valve, marking part of a disturbing trend of frequent attacks on wellheads in the region.

Soneye condemned the ongoing theft of crude oil from its facilities, particularly at Wellhead 008, and warned that the company is working closely with security agencies to curb such activities.

“Since March 2023, crude oil theft on this asset has been persistent,” the statement read. “Criminals are now resorting to extreme measures, including the use of dynamite to destroy installations and illegally access hydrocarbons.”

The company highlighted the financial toll of these criminal activities, which place a significant burden on the nation’s economy. NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to combating such fires, mitigating financial losses, and supporting affected communities.

“NNPC Ltd remains committed to combating these fires and mitigating the financial losses associated with these criminal activities,” the statement continued. “We will also continue to provide necessary relief efforts to mitigate the impact on affected communities.”

NNPC Ltd called for continued vigilance and cooperation from stakeholders to address these destructive acts, emphasizing the need to protect national assets from further damage.
