Vice President Shettima Reassures Nigerians Amid Economic Challenges

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, assured citizens on Monday that the government is actively working to mitigate the hardships caused by its reform initiatives. Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, held in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the administration’s commitment to addressing economic challenges and rebuilding weakened institutions across Africa to sustain democracy.

Shettima acknowledged the public’s concerns regarding the government’s policies, particularly the difficulties arising from necessary reforms. Accompanied by his Special Adviser on Political Issues, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Shettima highlighted the administration’s focus on creating a better future for Nigerians despite the challenges of transitioning from past failures.

“We are involved in correcting many defects in our economy and approaches to securing the citizen,” he stated. “We have been honest to admit that this transition from a broken past and a promising future will not be without a price, and we will remain focused on easing the pain and ensuring that we do not take our eyes off the goals.”

The vice president also discussed the broader context of democracy across Africa, linking widespread poverty and instability to the challenges of democratic governance. He underscored the need for economic stability and institutional strengthening as essential components of sustaining democracy on the continent.

Shettima reassured Nigerians that the administration remains responsive to their concerns and is prepared to adjust its policies as needed. “We will pay attention and modify our policies where necessary,” he affirmed, signaling the government’s openness to adapting its strategies to ease citizens' hardships.
