Governor Dauda Lawal to Inaugurate Governing Councils for Six Zamfara Universities
On Tuesday, January 28, Governor Dauda Lawal will officially inaugurate the Governing Councils of six state-owned universities at Gusau’s Government House. This milestone marks a significant effort toward reviving the education sector in Zamfara State.
The event will include a two-day retreat designed to educate council members on their roles, institutional laws, and best practices for managing tertiary institutions. The retreat will run from Tuesday to Wednesday and will be facilitated by a team of experts led by Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis, a former Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
According to Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, Secretary to the State Government, the initiative aligns with Governor Lawal’s “rescue agenda,” which aims to elevate the state’s educational standards. The councils were established in October 2024 based on recommendations from visitation committees that assessed the state of the institutions.
For the first time since Zamfara’s founding in 1996, a white paper on the recommendations has been adopted. Nakwada emphasized that this move reflects Governor Lawal’s dedication to addressing educational challenges and ensuring the effective management of the state’s tertiary institutions.
The retreat will serve as a capacity-building platform for council members, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to guide the universities effectively. Professor Bilbis and his team will focus on governance, strategic planning, and operational excellence to enhance institutional performance.
