Trump Reignites Greenland Debate, Claims US Control Vital for Global Freedom

US President Donald Trump has reignited discussions about Greenland, claiming the United States would gain control of the Danish territory as a matter of global freedom and security.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed confidence that the United States would secure the island, home to approximately 57,000 residents.

"I think we’re going to have it," Trump said. "The people want to be with us."

He emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance, framing it as essential for the protection of the free world.

"I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world," Trump added.

Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland follows a reported heated exchange with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who firmly dismissed the notion of Greenland being for sale. The Danish leader reportedly reiterated the territory’s independence during the call.

This isn’t the first time Trump has floated the idea of acquiring the Arctic territory. In 2019, during his first term, he hinted at purchasing Greenland, citing its strategic significance.

"Greenland is an absolute necessity for international security," Trump asserted, framing US control as vital for global stability.

While Trump claimed Greenlanders favor aligning with the United States, no official statement has been made by Greenland’s leadership to support this assertion.
