Army Foils Attempt To Inflame Tensions In Taraba Community

Tension was already sitting close to the surface in parts of Karim Lamido, and according to the Nigerian Army, an early morning incident on Tuesday was an intentional push to make things worse. Troops intervened just in time, preventing what could have spiraled into a wider communal clash.

Three suspects were taken into custody: Bitrus Ishaya, Mamman Ibrahim from Wudumpi, and Emmanuel Adi. They were arrested at the scene shortly after a house belonging to a Wurkun resident was set on fire.

A statement issued by Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 6 Brigade, revealed that initial checks showed Bitrus and Mamman had falsely claimed to be members of the Taraba Marshal. According to the release, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the claims by Bitrus and Mamman to be members of the Taraba Marshal were false, as both men failed to provide any form of official identification.”

Authorities also detained Emmanuel Adi, who said he was a vigilante, after what officials described as inconsistent and suspicious statements.

The Army believes the attack may have been an attempt to exploit the already delicate situation in the area. Officials noted that the quick response of the troops kept the incident from escalating into a broader conflict.

The suspects remain in custody while investigators work to confirm their identities and determine whether they have links to criminal groups posing as community security outfits.

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade, praised the troops for their rapid action. He warned that “Anyone attempting to ignite violence, destabilise communities, or fuel communal tensions will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.”

He also appealed to residents to stay calm and work with security operatives, saying, “We urge the public to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and continue reporting suspicious movements or activities.”
