Fresh Clashes Disrupt Peace Efforts In Karim Lamido
Tension has resurfaced in Taraba State just weeks after a government committee submitted recommendations aimed at ending long standing disputes in Karim Lamido Local Government Area. Despite those peace efforts, new clashes broke out last week, leaving several people dead and entire communities abandoned.
The latest unrest reportedly began with a dispute between residents of Shomo and Wurkun in Usmanu village, where both sides claimed ownership of farmland. What started as a disagreement quickly escalated, forcing many people to flee their homes.
Abner Shittu, who represents Karim Lamido in the Taraba State House of Assembly, urged residents to support the government’s peace moves. He noted that while the administration is making genuine efforts, community cooperation is essential.
The chairperson of Karim Lamido LGA, Virginia Baba Bambur, encouraged open communication among the affected groups. She said constructive dialogue and collaboration are necessary for any lasting solution.
The Taraba State Police Command confirmed the incident and said the situation is slowly stabilizing. Police spokesperson ASP Victor Mshelizah added that patrols remain active, even though residents believe armed groups still move around at night.
The curfew imposed on Karim Lamido town and about ten surrounding villages has since been lifted.
