Troops Disrupt Criminal Gang Behind Roadblock Attacks in Benue
On December 11, 2025. Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke, working alongside the Zaki-Biam Police Division and the Benue State Community Protection Guard, launched a coordinated operation after receiving credible intelligence about a criminal cell in Ukum Local Government Area.
The group had allegedly mounted an illegal roadblock on the highway connecting the Aturuku, Wembe, and Ayati communities. Travelers who unknowingly approached the spot were ambushed and driven off the road by the armed gang.
Lt. Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer for Operation Whirl Stroke, confirmed the development. He said the security team moved quickly once contact was made.
According to him:
• Troops engaged the criminals in a brief but decisive confrontation.
• Three suspects were neutralized on the spot.
• Several others escaped into the nearby bushes.
• Two motorcycles used by the gang were recovered.
• A follow-up search is ongoing to track down those who fled.
Further investigation revealed that the neutralized suspects were part of a long-running syndicate responsible for kidnappings and growing insecurity across Ukum LGA. Their operations were reportedly linked to incidents around the Zaki-Biam yam market, an area that has seen increasing criminal activity in recent months.
Community members later identified the deceased as Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe from Ugbaam Council Ward, along with a third suspect from Tse Kpeakaa in Kundav Council Ward. Sources also connected the group to a notorious bandit leader who operates in the Shitile axis of Katsina-Ala LGA.
Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, praised the collaborative effort. He acknowledged the commitment and discipline shown by the personnel involved and urged them to maintain momentum, increase presence in vulnerable communities, and continue relying on intelligence-driven tactics.
He reaffirmed the operation’s commitment to protecting civilians, supporting local stability efforts, and restoring long-term peace across the Joint Operations Area.
