Man Arrested Over Alleged Killing of Girlfriend in Abia

Police in Abia State have arrested a young man, Edward Okorie, over the alleged killing of his girlfriend, Sophy Chika, following a fight in their shared apartment in Ohafia.

Chika, a nurse from Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, was said to have been living with Okorie, who is from Ohafia LGA, before the incident occurred. Authorities say she was allegedly beaten during an altercation, though the exact circumstances leading to her death have not yet been officially established.

The Abia State Police Command confirmed the arrest through its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka. She stated that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia had briefed her on the case.

According to Chinaka, the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia for a detailed investigation. She noted that findings from the inquiry would clarify what transpired.

In a separate development, the SCID in Umuahia has also begun investigating another domestic homicide case involving a woman accused of stabbing her husband, identified as Chidiebere James, with a pair of scissors after allegedly discovering messages on his phone. The police spokesperson confirmed that investigation is ongoing.

Two incidents. Both domestic. Both ending in irreversible loss.

It is unsettling how arguments inside homes can escalate beyond control. Anger, suspicion, pride. In the heat of it, people cross lines they cannot step back from. And families are left trying to make sense of something that should never have happened.
