Three Arrested in Rivers Over Death of Suspected Palm Fruit Thief
Police in Rivers State have arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged killing of a suspected thief in Okogbe community, Ahoada-West Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Joshua, Friday Silas, and Godlove Obed, include two members of a local vigilante group and a commercial motorcyclist. Authorities say they are accused of torturing a man known simply as Gaddafi to death after he was alleged to have stolen palm fruits from the area.
The arrests took place in Ukpeliede community during a joint operation involving community youths and operatives of the Joint Task Force. Reports indicate the suspects were intercepted while attempting to dispose of the victim’s remains.
During questioning, Joshua, believed to be the vice chairman of the Okogbe vigilante group, allegedly told investigators that the deceased had posed an ongoing security concern within the community. He explained that Gaddafi was apprehended with the intention of removing him from society but died in the process.
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the development and said investigations are now underway.
“The suspect was involved in several cases of stealing and also attempted to rape an NYSC member in 2023. He was assaulted by community youths, which led to his death,” she stated, adding that the three suspects remain in police custody.
