Police Foil Attempted Arson at INEC Facility in Abaji

An attempt to set fire to a building belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission was thwarted in Abaji, just days before the February 21 FCT Council elections.

The incident occurred in the early hours of February 19, when unidentified individuals allegedly tried to burn down an INEC office building currently undergoing renovation.

According to police, officers attached to the Abaji Division were alerted around 7:30 a.m. and quickly deployed to the scene. The fire was extinguished shortly after their arrival.

Following an on-the-spot assessment, authorities said foul play is suspected, noting that the structure is still under renovation and not presently in use. The contractor handling the project is reportedly yet to meet the completion deadline.

Police emphasized that the main INEC office in the area remains safe and fully operational.

Security personnel have since been stationed at the location, with armed officers maintaining order while the situation continues to be monitored.
