Police Recover Three AK-47 Rifles at Niger Accident Scene, Condemn Mob Killing

The Niger State Police Command has recovered three AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 104 rounds of ammunition from the scene of a motorcycle accident involving two men traveling from Kaduna State.

In a statement issued on February 19, 2026, Police Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun said officers responded to a distress call reporting a single motorcycle crash. A patrol team was immediately dispatched to the location.

Upon arrival, police discovered a sack belonging to the accident victims. A search of the bag reportedly uncovered the firearms and ammunition.

According to Abiodun, one of the men died instantly from injuries sustained in the crash. The second individual was allegedly lynched by a mob before officers could evacuate him for medical attention. Both bodies were later deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Suleja.

Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police Adamu Abdullahi Elleman condemned the act of jungle justice. He noted that the suspect could have provided valuable information about the origin and intended use of the weapons.

The Commissioner directed the Area Commander in Suleja to launch a comprehensive investigation, including efforts to identify and arrest those involved in the mob action. The recovered rifles have been subjected to ballistic analysis as part of ongoing inquiries.

In a separate development, the Command also confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the violent theft of a motorcycle.

Police said that on February 17, 2026, a victim reported being attacked days earlier while riding his motorcycle to Kwanan-Mariga. The assailants allegedly used sticks to strike him, causing him to fall and sustain serious injuries before fleeing with the motorcycle.

Operatives attached to Kagara Division launched an investigation and arrested Umar Mansir, 40, in Kwanan-Mariga as he was allegedly attempting to sell the stolen motorcycle at Baban-Rami. The suspect reportedly confessed and named two accomplices, Abdullahi and Garba Danar Iliya, who remain at large.

The stolen motorcycle has been recovered, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
