Kano State Launches ₦16 Billion Jakara Dam Irrigation Project to Revolutionize Agriculture
In a bold step to transform agricultural productivity and food security, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially signed into law a ₦16 billion irrigation project at Jakara Dam, marking what officials describe as one of the most ambitious agricultural initiatives in the state’s history.
The project was approved during the 28th Executive Council Meeting, alongside two pivotal legislative actions:
-
The Water Users Association Establishment Law, 2025, and
-
An amendment to the Water Resources Engineering and Construction Agency (WRECA) Law, allowing the appointment of a Deputy Managing Director for WRECA.
According to Mustapha Muhammad, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor:
“With the passage of this bill into law, the Kano State Government can now commence the construction of a large-scale irrigation project at Jakara Dam.”
The initiative is set to cover 1,500 hectares for irrigation farming, directly benefiting thousands of farmers across Minjibir, Gabasawa, Gezawa, and neighboring communities.
Hon. Haruna Doguwa, Commissioner for Water Resources, emphasized that the new law opens access to ₦16 billion in funding required for the Jakara Dam Irrigation Project.
“This law will give us access to funds amounting to sixteen billion naira (₦16 billion) for the construction of the Jakara Dam Irrigation Project,” he said.
To further support farmers, especially during off-season periods, the government also plans to create a special account with an initial deposit of ₦5 billion.
“No doubt, this major irrigation project will create more wealth, generate job opportunities, and increase agricultural produce in the state,” Doguwa added.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has consistently prioritized agriculture and infrastructure as pillars of his administration’s development blueprint. The Jakara Dam project is expected to boost food production, empower rural communities, and significantly enhance Kano’s agro-economy.
