Nigerian Army Neutralizes Bandit in Taraba, Recovers AK-47 in Ongoing Security Operation

Troops from the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), have neutralized an armed bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle during a clearance operation in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, Taraba State.

According to a statement released by Captain Oni Olubodunde, the Acting Spokesperson for 6 Brigade, the operation followed a strategic directive issued by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, during a recent security visit to Bandawa community.

Acting promptly on the Commander’s directive, troops on a fighting patrol along the Bandawa–Karim Lamido road encountered armed criminals,” the statement read.
In a swift and decisive exchange of fire, the soldiers neutralized one bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle along with 39 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.”

Continued Military Presence and Community Collaboration

The army emphasized that the clearance operation was part of broader efforts to eliminate criminal hideouts, deter banditry, and restore long-term peace to volatile parts of Taraba State.

This operation is a demonstration of our resolve to rid the region of armed threats and protect law-abiding citizens,” said Captain Olubodunde.

In a related development, a peace conference was convened on May 12, 2025, in response to heightened hostilities between the Jato Aka community in Kwande LGA of Benue State and the Kashimbila community in Takum LGA of Taraba State.

The friction between both communities has led to multiple attacks on motorists along the Kashimbila–Jato Aka road, heightening regional tensions and disrupting civilian travel.

Authorities called on residents to remain calm and support ongoing military and peacekeeping operations.

The 6 Brigade leadership is encouraging locals to share accurate and timely intelligence to aid operational success and prevent further escalations.

We urge all peace-loving citizens to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activity. Community support is vital in sustaining the gains we’ve made,” the statement concluded.
