Peter Obi’s Team Members Allegedly in Talks to Join APC, Says Presidential Aide
The wave of political defections into Nigeria’s ruling party may be extending beyond governors and lawmakers, and now touching the inner circle of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate.
This claim was made by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Media and Policy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during a televised interview. Bwala stated that multiple members of Obi’s campaign team, including key media aides, are either already in the All Progressives Congress (APC) or in advanced discussions to join.
“Take, for example, Peter Obi. One of his handlers is with us. The second handler is in talks with us. One of his media spokesmen is in talks with us,” Bwala revealed.
The aide suggested that the ongoing realignments in Nigerian politics are not being driven by financial inducements but rather by perceived ideological and strategic advantages within the APC.
“Why are they joining us? Nobody is giving anybody kobo. But because they realize, we are not perfect as a government, but our hearts are right, our head is correct, and we are creating a national consensus,” he said.
While Bwala did not name the individuals in question, the implications of his remarks are significant. If true, such defections could signal cracks within Obi’s coalition and raise questions about the Labour Party’s long-term cohesion ahead of future elections.
The statement comes amid a broader trend of opposition figures, including high-profile governors and legislators, defecting to the ruling APC. The party has cited unity, national interest, and governance impact as key drivers of this political shift.
So far, Peter Obi and his media team have not issued a response to the claims. However, analysts say this could be the beginning of a fresh power shuffle as Nigeria begins to look ahead to the next electoral cycle.
