NSCDC Shuts Down Illegal Mining Site in Kaduna to Boost Investor Confidence
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully shut down an illicit mining site in Damau, a community in Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as part of ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The closure was executed by the agency’s Mining Marshals, a specialized unit tasked with combating illegal mining and economic sabotage nationwide. The operation targeted Trobell Minerals Limited’s tin-rich site, which had been overrun by unauthorized miners for months.
“This is coming after the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, gave a marching order on mapping out an effective and strategic approach towards tackling insecurity, vandalism of public utilities, and all acts of economic sabotage across the federation,” said CSC Afolabi Babawale, NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer, in a statement from Abuja.
The unauthorized operations had reportedly led to:
-
Significant financial losses
-
Environmental degradation
-
Rising local insecurity
-
Disruption of formal mining activities
What sets this operation apart, however, is the non-violent, community-focused approach employed by the NSCDC. Rather than relying solely on force, the agency initiated dialogue-driven strategies, engaging traditional leaders, youth groups, and local stakeholders to achieve a peaceful resolution.
As a result, the miners began vacating the site without resistance, under the supervision of NSCDC officials.
“This intervention has brought long-awaited relief,” a local authority told reporters, commending the government’s ability to balance enforcement with diplomacy.
Community members welcomed the intervention, describing it as a turning point for regional safety and economic stability, and pledged continued support for similar security initiatives.
Illegal mining remains a major obstacle to growth in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, which is often plagued by poor regulation, insecurity, and investor hesitation. By reclaiming control over mining zones, authorities aim to restore public trust and attract legitimate investment into a sector with vast untapped potential.
