Over 30 Killed in Taraba State as Armed Herders Attack Communities Amid Investment Push

At least 30 people have been killed and dozens displaced following violent attacks by suspected armed herders on the communities of Munga and Magami in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State. The coordinated assaults, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, left a trail of destruction, burned homes, and heightened tensions in the region.

The latest wave of violence has overshadowed the recently concluded Taraba Investment Summit, an event aimed at positioning the state as a hub for economic development. The summit had attracted key national figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, business magnate Tony Elumelu, and billionaire Aliko Dangote.

Survivors and local residents expressed frustration with the perceived slow response by the Taraba State Government, condemning the lack of a physical visit by Governor Agbu Kefas to the affected areas. Many drew comparisons to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who is known for visiting conflict zones and supporting victims directly.

This is not the leadership we were hoping for after such a promising investment summit,” said one local youth leader. “You can’t promote a state as safe for business when communities are left vulnerable.”

In a statement issued by Emmanuel Bello, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Digital Communications, Governor Kefas described the attacks as “horrendous and unacceptableand pledged swift action.

Our citizens’ safety is my top priority. We have activated all necessary security measures to prevent further violence and bring those responsible to book,” the governor said.

Residents were urged to remain calm, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with security agencies.

The Taraba State Police Command said the attack may have been triggered by a violent altercation involving a 15-year-old boy, Isah Ishaku, who was allegedly macheted on his farm in Munga Doso by an unidentified attacker.

According to Police spokesperson James Leshen, a joint team of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) and regular officers has been deployed to the area. Aggressive patrols are underway, and community leaders have been engaged to assist in mediation and peace-building efforts.
