Thunderstorms Expected Across Nigeria This Week, NiMet Warns

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a national weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms and cloud cover across the country from Wednesday through Friday.

According to the agency’s weather outlook released in Abuja, multiple regions are set to experience stormy conditions, with varying patterns throughout the day.

Northern Nigeria

• Morning thunderstorms (Wednesday): Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara

• Afternoon & evening storms (Wed–Fri): Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba

• Friday storms: Morning and afternoon in Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna

North-Central Nigeria

• Sunny intervals with isolated storms: Benue, Kogi, Kwara

• Afternoon & evening storms: Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Plateau, FCT

• Localized morning storms: Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, FCT

• Friday: Isolated storms with sunny skies in Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Benue, Kogi

Southern Nigeria

• Morning storms (Wednesday): Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom

• Extended afternoon storms: Most southern locations throughout the week

NiMet cautions that thunderstorms may come with strong winds, urging citizens to take preventive actions:

• Secure outdoor items that could be blown away

• Avoid driving during heavy downpours

• Turn off electrical appliances during lightning

• Stay away from tall trees and isolated shelters during storms

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather updates from NiMet to ensure safe flight planning and avoid turbulence delays.
