Abia State Intensifies Market Clean-Up to Protect Residents’ Health

The Abia State Government has stepped up its sanitation efforts across major marketplaces, deploying dump trucks to evacuate accumulated waste in a bid to safeguard public health.

Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, made the announcement while monitoring environmental sanitation in Aba. He explained that:

  • The goal is to prevent contaminated food and water from reaching consumers.

  • Regular waste evacuation will ensure clean air and maintain the quality of food and goods sold in the markets.

  • Governor Alex Otti’s initiative reflects his commitment to protecting both urban and rural residents from health hazards caused by pollution.

The commissioner urged:

  • Market leaders and traders to take ownership of their environment.

  • Active participation in routine clean-ups.

  • A cultural shift towards serious commitment to hygiene in all markets.

Market sanitation remains a key part of:

  • Curbing cholera and other waterborne diseases

  • Improving food safety for consumers

  • Enhancing the general livability of urban centers
