Kogi Boat Mishap: Death Toll Rises to 36, Dozens Still Missing
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed that at least 36 lives have been lost in the tragic boat accident that occurred in Ibaji Local Government Area, Kogi State.
The ill-fated boat was ferrying passengers from Akpu and Odumomo communities to Ilushi, Edo State, on Tuesday when it capsized. According to initial reports, over 80 people were on board.
Rescue Efforts
40 passengers have so far been rescued alive.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency teams and local divers still combing the river for survivors and bodies.
Many of the victims were women, children, and mourners returning from a burial ceremony, said NIWA.
Mr. Williams Isaac, Head of NIWA’s Idah Station, speaking on NTA’s News Xtra, disclosed that:
Most of the deceased were from Onugwa and other riverine communities in Ibaji.
NIWA is working with regional emergency teams and divers to provide relief and recover more victims.
Boat mishaps remain a recurring tragedy in Nigeria’s riverine areas, often linked to:
Overloading
Poor enforcement of safety rules
Use of rickety boats
Absence of life jackets
