Atiku Meets EU Delegation, Pushes for Genuine Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2027
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed meeting with a high-powered European Union (EU) delegationled by Barry Andrews, a member of the European Parliament and head of the EU Election Observation Mission to Nigeria during the 2023 general elections.

According to Atiku, the EU team’s visit was a follow-up mission to review how far Nigeria has gone in implementing the recommendations made after the 2023 elections.
He noted that the conversation centered on the future of Nigeria’s elections and the urgent need to restore confidence in the system.
Atiku expressed frustration that, nearly two years after the 2023 polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shown little commitment to meaningful reform.
“Expectations are high that INEC will urgently work with the National Assembly to give citizens election laws that guarantee transparent and credible elections, where every vote counts,” Atiku said.
He warned that without decisive reforms, Nigeria risks repeating past mistakes in the 2027 general elections.
Atiku pledged continued support for the work of:
Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)
Local and international election observers
Foreign missions, including the EU-EOM
He stressed that only credible elections can safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and produce leaders capable of ensuring unity and economic prosperity.
