Islamic Scholars Warn of Tension, Seek Action Against Alleged Blasphemy in Kaduna

A group of Islamic clerics known as the Concerned Ulama of Sunnah has submitted a petition to the Kaduna State Government, accusing two preachers of making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in their online sermons.

The petition, led by Shaikh Umar Shehu Zaria and Malam Muhammad Sani Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Juma'at Mosque in Hayin Na'iya, was signed by sixteen scholars and calls for immediate government intervention to prevent potential unrest.

According to the clerics, the alleged remarks could create serious tension in the state if not addressed promptly. They appealed to the government to either halt the preachers’ activities or organize a public debate to clarify their statements. The scholars emphasized that their petition was not personal but rooted in a desire to uphold Islamic principles and protect the honor of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which they described as a sacred duty for all Muslims.

They also referenced Islamic teachings that classify blasphemy as a grave offense and urged authorities to respond responsibly to maintain peace and order.

In response, Tahir Umar Tahir, Director-General of the Kaduna State Bureau for Interfaith, confirmed receipt of the petition. He assured that the matter would be handled appropriately and in line with due process.

“We received their petition on behalf of Governor Uba Sani, and by God’s grace, the matter will be properly handled,” Tahir stated.

He further advised all religious leaders in the state to exercise caution in their preaching and avoid statements that could provoke division or threaten public harmony.
