APC Denies Reports of Shettima’s Removal
Reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu plans to remove Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 general elections have been officially denied by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, issued the statement on January 26 in response to an interview with Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa. In the interview, Musawa warned that dropping Shettima or failing to select a northern Muslim running mate could reduce the APC’s chances in the upcoming election.
Musawa’s remarks coincided with speculation that the ruling party might reconsider the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket that contributed to its 2023 election victory. She said:
“If there is no Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri Muslim on that ticket, it creates a hurdle. That is the reality of the way people think.”
Morka’s statement, however, categorically dismissed such rumors. He described them as “purely speculative, untrue, and utterly baseless,” urging government and party officials to focus on their responsibilities rather than fueling unfounded reports.
The APC statement further emphasized:
• Media frenzy suggesting Shettima’s replacement is based on questionable sources.
• Specific names being circulated as potential replacements are part of baseless speculation.
• Media organizations are called upon to avoid amplifying rumors that create discord.
Morka also reminded the public that political activity remains regulated under Nigeria’s laws and electoral norms.
“At this time, our party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, entrenching bold reforms, transforming the economy, and improving the living conditions of Nigerians,” the statement read.
This clarification from the APC seeks to stabilize public discourse and reaffirm its commitment to the current leadership ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
