Troops Recover Weapons Cache in Taraba Security Operation

Security forces operating in Taraba State have recorded another breakthrough in efforts to curb armed criminal activity, following the recovery of a large cache of weapons and ammunition in Takum Local Government Area.

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, successfully uncovered the arms during an intelligence-led operation conducted on January 4, 2026.

The development was confirmed in a statement shared on the Nigerian Army’s official X account.

According to the military, the success followed credible intelligence on the movement of an associate linked to a notorious criminal kingpin, identified as John Ngata.

Acting swiftly on the information, Operation Whirl Stroke troops deployed from Zaki-Biam established a checkpoint along a suspected route in Takum Local Government Area. The suspect was apprehended without resistance.

During preliminary questioning, the suspect reportedly cooperated with security personnel and led them to a concealed arms depot located in Amadu village within Takum LGA.

A search of the location uncovered a significant quantity of arms and explosives, including:

  • 13 AK-47 rifles

  • 39 AK-47 magazines

  • 690 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition

  • 4 hand grenades

Military sources confirmed that the recovered armory was destroyed on-site to prevent further use by criminal elements.

The troops returned safely to base after completing the operation.

Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, commended the troops for their professionalism, rapid response, and effective use of intelligence.

He described the operation as a major disruption to the criminal supply chain in the area, noting that such recoveries weaken the operational capacity of armed groups.

Gara also expressed appreciation to residents who provided timely and reliable intelligence, emphasizing the importance of civilian cooperation in security operations.

The commander reassured members of the public that information shared with security agencies would be treated with strict confidentiality and acted upon promptly.

He urged communities within the operation’s area of responsibility to continue supporting security efforts by reporting suspicious activities.

According to him, Operation Whirl Stroke in Taraba State remains committed to maintaining peace, stability, and the protection of lives and property.

Major General Gara also acknowledged the continued support of the Service Chiefs and the Chief of Defence Staff, crediting their strategic guidance and logistical backing for the operation’s success.

He reiterated that sustained investment in personnel welfare, equipment, and readiness remains central to the task force’s effectiveness.
