Violent Clash in Meiran Triggers Panic as Youths Allegedly Chase Each Other with Axes
Residents of Meiran in Lagos State were thrown into fear on Wednesday afternoon after a violent altercation involving suspected thugs erupted around the Kabowei Bus Stop axis.
The incident, which reportedly occurred at about 1:00 p.m., caused panic among commuters, motorists, and traders in the area. Although no deaths were recorded, witnesses said the situation was tense as groups of young men were seen chasing one another with axes.
As the disturbance unfolded, residents and commuters fled for safety, while several drivers reportedly abandoned their vehicles to avoid being caught in the violence. Traffic along the road was temporarily disrupted as the youths ran across the area, some visibly armed.
Segun, a resident who witnessed the incident, said he was forced to abandon his car and take cover in a nearby building.
“The incident started close to an amala joint at Meiran Bus Stop. When I saw about five men holding axes and chasing others, I immediately abandoned my car and ran into a nearby house,” he said.
“I didn’t want to risk driving through that situation. Several other motorists also parked their vehicles and waited until things settled. After some minutes, when everywhere was calm, I returned to pick up my car.”
Another resident, Moses, attributed the clash to a disagreement between a local ice cream vendor and a group of youths.
“Some boys collected ice cream and refused to pay for it. When the seller asked for his money, they started threatening him,” he explained.
“He then called his friends to intervene. That was when the situation escalated, and some of the boys allegedly brought out axes, leading to the chaos.”
As of the time of filing this report, it could not be confirmed whether anyone sustained injuries during the incident.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, were not returned.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents, especially amid growing reports of similar violent confrontations involving youths and dangerous weapons in different parts of Lagos.
