Seven Killed in New Year’s Eve Attack in Plateau Community

At least seven people were killed when armed attackers stormed the community late on December 31, 2025, during cross-over night activities marking the transition into 2026. Several others were injured, homes were set ablaze, and families were forced to flee.

The incident was confirmed in a statement issued Thursday morning by Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM).

“While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, were plunged into mourning following a deadly attack,” Tengwong said.

According to him, the Plateau State attack occurred around 11:00 p.m., just minutes before the New Year, as residents prepared to end 2025 peacefully.

“As of this morning, seven corpses have been recovered, while search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, raising fears that the casualty figure may rise,” he added.

Tengwong also noted that the attack happened despite earlier security advisories warning that some communities in Jos South LGA were at risk of violence. He expressed concern that the warnings were not adequately acted upon.

“Sadly, the Bum community has now fallen victim to this renewed wave of violence. This latest Plateau State attack adds to the growing list of assaults on rural communities, deepening concerns over the safety of lives and property, especially during festive periods meant for peace,” he said.

He further stated that the Berom Youths Moulder-Association is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
