DSS Officer Allegedly Kills One, Injures Two in Abuja Shooting Incident
A Department of State Services (DSS) operative, identified as Ajayi Abayomi, has allegedly shot and killed one person while injuring two others during an altercation in Karmajiji village, Abuja.
According to Daily Trust on Friday, January 30, 2026, the incident occurred on January 19 at an intersection leading into Karmajiji hamlet, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
Witnesses said a pickup truck broke down at the junction, causing a traffic jam. A DSS officer driving a Peugeot 406 was reportedly caught in the congestion, exited his vehicle, and allegedly slapped the pickup driver after accusing him of obstructing traffic.
The situation reportedly escalated when a resident, Ibrahim Sarkin Samari, approached the scene to intervene. A witness, Muazu Kabiru, alleged that the DSS operative then retrieved a pistol from his car and fired a shot.
The bullet reportedly missed Samari but struck Musa Adamu, who was seated in front of a nearby shop. Two other individuals, Salisu Suleiman and Yakubu Samaila, were also hit by the stray bullet.
An angry crowd reportedly attacked the officer and vandalised his vehicle following the shooting. Police officers from a nearby outpost intervened to restore order. The DSS operative reportedly fled the scene, while his vehicle was recovered and taken to the police outpost.
Musa Adamu was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, where doctors later confirmed his death. The two injured victims sustained abdominal injuries and were treated and discharged.
One of the survivors, Salisu Suleiman, said he was not directly involved in the altercation and was hit unexpectedly by the bullet.
Another resident, Shuaibu Ishaq, claimed the officer appeared to target Samari, noting that the operative was not in uniform at the time of the incident.
According to Ishaq, the DSS has acknowledged the incident, covered hospital expenses, and promised compensation (Diyya) to the family of the deceased. Musa Adamu is survived by two wives, Hauwa Mohammed and Rukayyat Abdulkadir, and seven children.
Sources at the police outpost confirmed that the case has been transferred to the FCT Command, adding that the DSS officer remains at large.
Meanwhile, a DSS source claimed the operative fired the shot in self-defense to avoid being attacked by a mob, stating that the victims were initially reported as discharged.
