New Year Day Accidents Leave Multiple Dead in Lagos

The New Year began on a tragic note in Lagos State as multiple road crashes were recorded on January 1, 2026, resulting in several deaths and numerous injuries across different locations.

At least two people were confirmed dead in one of the major Lagos traffic accidents at Iyana Itire, inward Oshodi. The crash involved a Toyota Sienna with registration number KSF 329 XL and a Volkswagen commercial bus bearing SMK 850 HK.

The impact of the collision reportedly killed the two victims instantly.

In a separate incident around Ibeju Bridge on the inner Eleko stretch of the Lekki-Ajah Expressway, a DAF tanker collided with an Opel Zafira with registration number EPE 537 GZ. Two occupants sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Another crash was recorded at Owode Elede, inward Owode Onirin along Ikorodu Road. The accident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number AGL 713 XP and a Toyota Corolla bearing AGL 607 JF.

Four occupants were injured in the collision and were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

The series of Lagos traffic accidents was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

According to the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emergency responders promptly contacted the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit to evacuate the deceased, while injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals. Traffic flow was later restored at all affected locations.

Bakare-Oki stated that preliminary observations indicated the crashes were largely avoidable and attributed them to reckless driving and excessive speeding. He urged motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations, particularly during festive periods.

In a related development, another accident at NASFAT Junction along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reportedly claimed at least six lives, with two others sustaining severe injuries.
